A Non-Linear Path to Success

A Michigan graduate working for the Big Ten Conference—who would expect this path to run through Loyola’s Institute for Paralegal Studies? Tyler Marx, BA Michigan 2019, was interested in a legal career, but didn’t want to go straight into law school. Instead he chose to pursue a Litigation and Corporate Practice Certificate at Loyola’s School of Continuing and Professional Studies (SCPS). Now ready, Tyler will pursue his JD at Loyola School of Law’s Weekend JD program in Fall 2025.

Having worked remotely for Michigan’s Unemployment Insurance Agency during the pandemic, Tyler moved to Chicago around the time he started at a legal services firm, Costello Ginex & Wideikis, PC, while pursuing his studies at SCPS. Shortly after graduating, Tyler was hired by the Big Ten Conference in March 2023.

“As for my experience in the paralegal program, it was great”, Tyler states. “Without having been exposed to the material generally--and specifically the material of the civil procedure courses--I feel I would have been much less likely to break into the legal field as a paralegal at a firm focused primarily on civil litigation. What I was learning during the program was directly applicable to my work, and that was invaluable.”

Tyler's current role at the Big Ten Conference is less focused on litigation and more oriented towards the corporate side of the law. He manages nearly all of the Conference's contracts, which has been a challenging, yet rewarding, opportunity. Experiencing the legal field from the perspectives of litigation and corporate practice provided him with the insight he needed to verify his desire to go to law school.

As for his advice for future adult learners: “It is a daunting task, and it's going to take a lot of work, but it's entirely doable”, Tyler acknowledges. “The professors are more than willing to work with you. Remain organized, and if you have the passion for this sort of work, then you will definitely be able to do it.”
